Open Mic takes it to another level
Starting this semester, Open Mic Night, an event sponsored by Sigma Tau Delta that draws artists from the college and community, will have two distinct branches: Mixed Mic, a performance of various types of music, and Just Words, a venue for poetry and prose readings.
Open Mic originally intended to focus on the written and spoken word, but recently has become more musically-oriented. Lee Miller and Dean Tucker, both professors in the English and Humanities Department, have started another session, called “Just Words.”
“The Just Words Open Mic Night–a complement to the very successful Mixed-Mic–provides an opportunity for those who are interested to focus exclusively on the spoken word,” Miller said.
Tucker said that the last Open Mic of the Spring 2010 semester had around 120 people and lasted almost four hours. Just Words is intended to “offer a more intimate setting where people can read poetry,” Tucker said.
Just Words will take place the third Friday of every month, while the original Open Mic, now called “Mixed Mic,” will be the first Friday of every month. Both events will take place at 8 p.m. at the Bean Broker Coffee House.
