The National Weather Service at 10 p.m., Monday issued a Winter Storm Warning for western Nebraska, including Dawes County.

Officials at the weather service predict the “significant” spring snow storm will deal most of its damage today and tomorrow and bring “widespread heavy snow, winds in excess of 45 mph, and snow accumulations over one foot across portions of the Eastern Plains of southeast Wyoming and the western Nebraska Panhandle.”

National Weather Service officials recommend those in the affected area restrict travel, but offer several tips for those that become stranded while driving.

“If you become stranded in a rural area. Stay with your vehicle until help arrives,” a National Weather Service release states. “To keep warm in your vehicle, run your engine 10 minutes each hour, and make sure the exhaust pipe is clear of snow to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.”
