Thumm titled RMAC Wrestler of the Week

While most students were enjoying their time off during the three-week winter break, the CSC wrestling team was still hard at work.
The team wrestled at Doane College, Midland University and Hastings College in the past month, with wrestler Brock Thumm, 141-pound junior of Watervliet, Michigan named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week.
Thumm won the 141-pound bracket at the Doane College Open with two pins and three decisions in Crete, on Saturday, Dec. 9. He is the first wrestler from CSC to be named Wrestler of the Week this year.
The Eagles had four other wrestlers place at the Doane Open. Jake Otuafi, 157-pound redshirt sophomore of Sparks, Nevada, finished in third at the Doane Open in the 157-pound category. Otuafi finished 4-1, losing to the champion of the bracket, University of Nebraska Lincoln‘s Zemua Baptista, redshirt freshman of Friend.
Herber Shepherd, 174-pound redshirt junior of Spanish Fork, Utah, placed fifth at Doane in the 174-pound category. Shepherd finished the tournament 4-2.
Evan Smith, 133-pound junior of Louisville, Colorado, who is no longer on the team, and Johnny Porter, redshirt junior of Bellevue, both finished in sixth for the Eagles.
Brock Thumm finished in first place at Midland University in the Viking-Warrior Open in Fremont on Dec. 30. He defeated two wrestlers by decision, both from the University of Nebraska-Kearney. He beat Johnathan Killingsworth, 141-pound redshirt freshman of Lincoln, (6-4), and Tevin Briscoe, 149-pound sophomore of Garden City, Kansas, (8-4). He also defeated Joe Ritzen, 133-pound freshman of Chadron, by pin, who was wrestling unattached.
Three other wrestlers placed at Midland. Brandon Kile, 125-pound junior of Hastings wrestled at 133, and placed fourth in the category.
Chance Karst, 133-pound sophomore of Powell, Wyoming finished in fifth in the 133-pound category. He lost to teammate Brandon Kile in the semifinals, and to Bryce Shoemaker, University of Nebraska-Kearney 133-pound senior from Baldwin City, Kansas. Devin Stork, 184-pound freshman of Canton, South Dakota also placed at the Viking-Warrior open.
In the new year, the team traveled to Hastings College for the Hastings Cusatis Open on Jan. 6. Caleb Haskell, 149-pound sophomore of Madison, and Alex Mai, 285-pound redshirt junior of Bennett, Colorado, were the two wrestlers that competed for points for the Eagles, with other members wrestling unattached. Both finished 1-2 in their weight classes.
The Eagles next meet is against the Colorado School of Mines on Jan. 11, at 6 p.m. in the Chicoine Center.
