Lawmaker introduces bill to protect students’ first amendment rights
An east Nebraska lawmaker introduced a bill early last week aimed at protecting First Amendment rights of the state’s student journalists.
Calling it the Student Journalism Protection Act, Sen. Adam Morfeld, District 46, Lincoln, introduced LB886 Jan. 8 with the intent of protecting free speech and free expression rights of Nebraska’s high school and college journalism students who participate in school-sponsored media.
According to the Nebraska Legislature website, the bill was referred to the legislature’s Judiciary Committee. Public hearings have not been scheduled as of press time Wednesday.
