Free movie night gets $1800 from CAB

A representative from Dining Services attended the Campus Activities Board meeting Tuesday to announce the “I Survived Chili Week” event.
The CAB executive board and club members also discussed various smaller topics, including free movie night, Spring Days and Scholastic Day.
The treasurer made her regular report, an appeal was made to donate blood, and the college’s pending transition to a new campus-wide student information system was announced.

  • Amber James, catering supervisor of CSC Dining Services, announced the ninth annual “I Survived Chili Week,” which is set to take place Monday through Friday.
    She asked that CAB donate no more than $100 for prizes. In the past, award funds had been provided by the event’s former sponsor, Campbell’s Soup Co.
    CAB allocated no more than $100 for the prizes. The motion passed 39 – 0.
    The Winter Olympics is the theme for this year’s event. On Monday, a form of Russian chili will be served, Cuban chili on Tuesday, Malaysian chili on Wednesday, United States chili on Thursday, and wrapping up the week, Italian chili on Friday, James said.
  • CAB President Matt Coe asked for input on free movie night, what night CAB members would like to have it, and what movie they would like to see.
    The movie “Dear John” was requested; however, it was decided that movie predictions are difficult due to limited showing in the Eagle Theatre. The next free movie night is set for Feb. 28.
    Coe asked that a motion be made to allocate no more than $1,800 for February’s free movie night. The motion passed with 37 – 2, with one member abstaining.
  • Vice-President Jamie Benson reminded CAB members that Spring Days begins April 11. Starting 7 p.m. Tuesday, there will be a weekly meeting in Edna lobby for club members to notify the executive board about what they are planning to contribute to Scholastic Day, or Spring Days. Scholastic Day is planned for April 9.
  • Christine Aye, treasurer, reported that at the start of the meeting there was $9,342 in the treasury. She also said budget packages will be online by the end of the week.
  • Jordan Haas, student events, said that wrestlers will host New Mexico Highlands 3 p.m. Sunday in the Nelson Physical Activity Center. In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, Haas said to “bring your sweetie over to the PAC.”
  • Laure Sinn, coordinator of student events, said that today’s Late Night in the Pit is a table tennis tournament.
    Sinn also notified CAB members that this year is the 50th anniversary of Scholastic Day.
  • A Cardinal Key representative asked that everyone donate blood today in the Student Center.
  • Student Trustee Doug Liewer said the transition from MyCSC to PeopleSoft, also called NeSIS. Students will be required to get a new student ID in April.
    Liewer emphasized that classes will fill up fast, so student should meet with their advisor and have their fall and spring schedule set up in order to ensure a seat.
    According to James Bahensky, Omega Phi Rho representative and senator at large, Dr. Lois Veath, vice-president for academic and student affairs, said a registration booth will be set up in the Ponderosa room in the Student Center for about two weeks starting April 12.
