Letters: James Bahensky
Dear Editor:
Semper veritas, always the truth, is the motto you have chosen to inscribe below the title of The Eagle, yet time and again I have found the “truth” misrepresented in several of your articles.
My main concern is the hearsay by which you have accumulated your information. When was the last time Mr. Oleksy attended a Student Senate meeting?
I am referring of course to his most recent column, “Senate should scrutinize it’s own efficiency, relevance, not just CAB’s.” (“It’s,” I believe is a contraction, should it not be the possessive “its?”)
“‘We Hate Trayless Operations,’ has 175 fans. This is by no means a rigorous or scientific poll, but it raises a valid point.”
“…it is plain to see that a sizeable portion of the student body does not share this view [about going trayless].”
Based on the facts you have presented I am finding it difficult to see how 175 members in a Facebook group is a “sizeable portion of the student body.” Did you know that there are over 2,000 students that either commute to or live on campus?
“Instead of easing into things with more frequent trayless days…the Senate made the change and then set up a booth to discuss concerns.”
I believe trayless options were eased into beginning with trayless Tuesday and then to Tuesday/Thursday. In fact The Eagle published an article Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009, voicing Senate’s decision concerning trayless options.
“The abolition of all tray use is already set for this spring. By February, the cafeteria will be completely trayless.” “Senators will be available for discussion during the transition.”
I also believe that the Senate website “Current Projects” tab was updated prior to the end of the Fall 2009 semester, which announced the trayless project.
Yes, it is true that Senate is not equally represented as of now by each school. It is only through the continued interest of the people that the political process can flourish.
I encourage those who want to play an active role to petition on to Student Senate.
Columnist Bill Vaughan said, “A citizen of America will cross the ocean to fight for democracy, but won’t cross the street to vote in a national election.”
