Eagle softball to host Mavericks in home opener after 2-2 road trip
The Chadron State College women’s softball team will host Mesa State College for its first home games for the season noon Friday and 11 a.m. Saturday.
The Eagles have a 6-11 overall record so far this season. The team is 3-5 in the RMAC, while the Mavericks hold a 1-7 RMAC record. The Mavericks are 3-7 overall.
Last weekend, the Eagles split both days against the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks in Farmington, N.M.
Friday, the team lost the first game 7-2 but won the second 10-9.
During the first game, the Eagles came back from the Skyhawks’ 7-4 lead. The fifth inning they tied the score at 7.
The game went into extra innings when junior left-fielder Katie Bolin of Kearney batted in second-basemen Melissa Lohr, senior of Eaton, Colo.
The Eagles compiled three base hits, two of which were home-runs by Bolin and senior pitcher Cassie Humphrey of Chadron.
Humphrey pitched the entire 7 innings.
For last Saturday’s games, the Eagles lost again 2-4 the first game but came back and won the second game 6-4.
The first game, the Skyhawks scored all their runs with a 3-run home-run in the third inning. Freshman Kate Pinder of Fallon pitched the second game Saturday and only allowed 11 hits.
Saturday’s second game, the Eagles relied on their defense for the last three innings. The first inning, the team started off with four straight hits that scored the first two runs. Allison Hendricksen, senior catcher of Cozad, had two hits with two RBI’s.
Lohr scored three runs for the Eagles while freshman infielder Brittney Debord of North Platte hit her first home-run. Humphrey pitched all seven innings and gave up only seven hits.
The games were played in Farmington because Fort Lewis’s home field was covered in snow.
