Shay Chamberlain, seventh-grader of Chadron Middle School, works on improving her writing skills through an exploratory writing session led by Jovan Mays, senior of Aurora, Colo.
During a writing exercise where participants were asked to write contrasting mood poems, a member begins to craft her poem. At the end of the evening, willing participants shared their poetry with their colleagues.
The CSC Library is sponsoring “The Write Track” as a new extracurricular initiative for college students and other interested community members designed to encourage and improve writing skills. This goal is accomplished through creative writing prompts, extemporaneous writing sessions, and feedback and peer-review of other attending participants.
Jovan Mays, senior of Aurora, Colo., serves as one of the group’s instructors alongside faculty member Lynette Harper. The group occurs bi-monthly (every other week) on Thursday nights at 7 p.m.
For additional information or to inquire about scheduling, please contact Jovan Mays at [email protected].
English Professor Matthew Evertson crafted his mood poem on the tragedy of his children moving, but then contrasted this emotion with the joy of having children at all, even if they are temporarily absent:
“My kids are moving
A little farther away from me each day
And now they are moving for real
200 miles south of here and
We travel together in worry
Towards the future when the space will grow,
Between us…
But not even a million miles could ever
Truly break the bond we bear
For all the times we’ve had, and
Those future days, sweet and precious,
More so for the space between them
In time, but not in space. Not in space.
Our hearts fill every inch of distance.”
