Track team completes indoor season at NCAA Nationals in Albuquerque
Two Chadron State sophomores placed in the finals of the NCAA Division II Indoor National Championships for track and field in Albuquerque, N.M., Saturday.
Lanar Newman, sophomore of Kingston, Jamaica, placed ninth in the long jump Friday and then placed ninth again in the two-day heptathlon competition.
Newman finished the championship with 4,802 points, just one point shy of the All-American honor.
A sophomore of Central Missouri, Darius Walker, won the event with 5,377 points.
Cody Hunt of Litchfield, placed ninth in the shot put competition with a throw of 56-4 1/2 feet.
Hunt finished eighth in last year’s competition.
Junior of Ashland, Kurt Roberts, set a new national meet record with a fifth round throw of 64-11 1/2 feet.
The Eagles finished their indoor season with record setting times.
“Coming from placing second highest in the RMAC for the first time in school history, we as a team did very good,” Eagles coach Ryan Baily said. “The athletes competed well … their attitudes were great.”
The outdoor track and field season will start for the Eagles March 27 at Colorado school of Mines in Golden, Colo.
