‘Synergy’ jazzes things up with hot rags and cool blues

The Synergy Brass Quintet performed on the stage in Memorial Hall 7 p.m. Monday following the Chadron State College Jazz Festival. The quintet’s performance was part of the Galaxy Series.

The group, which is from Chestertown, Md., is composed of trumpeter player Bobby Thorp, French horn player Jon Hurrell, trombonist Jordan Witt, tuba player Jesse Chavez and second trumpeter Greg Lloyd.

The Synergy Brass Quintet performs at “nearly 300 engagements per year,” according to the group’s Web site, www.synergybrass.com. The Web site also states that the Synergy Brass Quintet has a strong dedication to education, having “presented various programs at over 500 public schools from coast to coast.”

At Monday’s performance, the five men played a wide variety of songs, including “Flight of the Bumblebee” and “The Saints Go Marching In.” The evening closed with a standing ovation for the ensemble.
