Department asks readers to take a hike

The Spring Read, an event organized by the CSC English and Humanities department as part of a new recruitment strategy, will take place 1 p.m. Saturday. The event is set to take place at “The Cliffs,” located south of Chadron and 5.5 miles east of the Job Corps Center.

The department will be filming parts of The Spring Read and will be using the video in order to promote the new environmental strategy during Fall 2010. Anyone interested in Saturday’s activities is invited to attend.

“We will have a hike on one of the adjacent trails, taking time at various points to stop, reflect and read from our favorite authors and their writings about nature and the outdoors,” Matthew Evertson, associate professor of English and Humanities, said.

“When you are hiking, you’ve got to stop for a while. It’s a good opportunity to read,” Evertson said.

The English department puts a large emphasis on the environment by introducing new courses built around the region and inventing new outdoor activities. Their slogan for this new program is “Get Outside.”

Participants should bring appropriate hiking shoes, water, writing materials, and books from which to read their favorite passages. Those wishing to attend are to meet in the parking lot of Old Admin at 12:30 p.m. Saturday to carpool to the Cliffs.
