Senate unveils 2010-2011 budget allocations
The Student Senate Finance Committee released budget allocations for the 2010-2011 year during Tuesday’s Campus Activities Board meeting.
Of the 46 clubs, associations, and organizations, 21 received allocations equal to last year’s, 11 received greater allocations than last year, and eight received less money than last year, according to the Senate Finance Committee allocations document.
Chi Alpha received the single largest increase, doubling their allocation from $750 to $1,500.
The Pit received a $500 increase, bringing their total $9,500.
An additional $500 was set aside for appeals, bringing the total to $1,000.
CAB received $27,650 this year, an increase of $1,685 over last year’s $25,965.
The Eagle saw the single largest decrease, receiving $2,000 less than last year’s allocation of $9,000. This is the first decrease for The Eagle since the 1997-1998 school year.
Night of Country Swing, who received $750 last year, did not ask for any funds this year. The club submitted a budget packet in order to stay active as a club.
New clubs include Omega Phi Rho, which received $1,000, Service Club, which also received $1,000, and Xi Delta Zeta, which received $500.
A total of $1,000 was set aside for clubs that may be formed before the next round of Senate budget allocations.
Six clubs—Game Players Association, Natural Sciences Club, Nu Delta Alpha, White Buffalo Club, Campus Historical Forum and LDSSA—were designated as inactive by the Senate Finance Committee for failure to submit a budget packet.
Student Senate was given $105,000 from student activity fees to be disbursed by the finance committee. This year’s allocation from student activity fees is unchanged from last year’s.
Budget appeals are scheduled to take place April 8. Clubs may sign up for an appeal hearing in the Senate office. Christine Aye, CAB treasurer and sophomore of Burma, asked that club members wait to ask questions until after appeals.
The Student Senate bylaws state, the finance “committee shall consist of three (3) members from Senate, the Student Senate Treasurer, the Campus Activities Board (CAB) treasurer, two (2) members from CAB, and two (2) members from the general student population (these members must be registered as full time CSC students).”
The students on the committee are Aye; CAB member Hella Bekele, sophomore of Ethiopia, CAB member Luke Wright, junior of Waunita, Senate Chief Justice Jacob Karmazin, junior of Lawrence, Senate Vice-President Jennifer Weiss, junior of Ainsworth, Senate Treasurer Chelsea Keeney, senior of Callaway, Senate Corresponding Secretary Bethany Seifert, sophomore of Lawrence, Senator at-Large Michelle Mahr, sophomore of Sidney, Senator at-Large James Bahensky, sophomore of Anselmo, and Advisor Laure Sinn, coordinator of student events.
Section B of the Finance Committee article of the Student Senate bylaws stipulates that two members of “the general student population” be on the committee.
This stipulation “depends on interpretation,” Seifert said.
