Track wins CSU-Pueblo Meet
The CSC men’s track and field won first place among 14 teams in the jumps, hurdles, and relays scoring 132 points at the Colorado State-Pueblo Meet on Saturday.
Fort Hays State University placed second with 104.25 points, and some of CSC’s athletes, who usually place high, did not participate at the meet.
The CSC men earned the most points in jump competitions. Lanar Newman, sophomore of Kingston, Jamaica, won with 23-1 3/4 in the long jump. Brandon Harrington, senior of Grand Island, placed first in the triple jump with a leap of 48-10 1/4, and Riley Northrup, senior of Hot Springs, S.D., took second in both the high jump at 6-6 1/4 and the triple jump at 47-2 1/2.
The Eagles also did well in the hurdles. Lincoln Proud, sophomore of Pinedale, Wyo., won the 400-meter hurdles in 54.49 seconds. In 110-meter hurdles, Harrington came in second in 14.57, Karl McFarlane, freshman of Montego Bay, Jamaica, came in third in 14.58, and Newman finished fourth in 15.02 seconds.
Proud, Newman, Jake Gruver, senior of Cheyenne, Wyo. and Grant Sasse, senior of Monument, Colo., placed second in the 4×400 relay with a final time of 3:21.71. The Eagles won the 4×100 relay with Newman, McFarlane, Harrington, and Gruver anchoring in 42.00.
Gruver also won the 100-meter run in 10.79 seconds, and placed fourth in the javelin.
Phil Rivera, freshman of Apple Valley, Calif., placed third in 400-meter dash with 49.94 second. Joe Schultz, junior of Alliance, won the third place for the team in the 1500-meter run with the final time of 4:08.28.
“The men’s team has been outstanding this season trying to go for the conference meet title,” Matt Sparks, sprints and hurdles coach said.
The CSC women placed seventh with 42.5 points led by Julia Bayer, senior of Stuttgart, Germany, who won second place with 17-11 in the long jump. Bayer also placed fourth in the triple jump, and finished fifth in 100-meter hurdles.
Ashley Riesen, freshman of Chadron, finished third in the 1500 with 4:55.47.
The CSC women’s team placed second in the 4×100 relay in 49.23 anchored by Bayer.
“The women are young and talented, and they have grown and progressed since the first meet,” Sparks said.
The Eagles are heading to Des Moines, Iowa on Thursday to compete in the Drake Relays.
