Letter: Allyn Leick on Culture Corner
Is it just me, or are some of The Eagle’s readers missing something very
important about Culture Corner?
While I understand why some people in this school’s population would cry out
against articles critiquing girls’ appearances–I have had those pained
twinges–I am flabbergasted that so many people are infuriated over Culture
Corner’s articles.
"No one can make you feel inferior without your consent." Was I the
only one paying attention when the high school teacher talked about Eleanor
Roosevelt? Am I the only one who watched The Princess Diaries?
It’s starting to look like it.
For those girls out there who were outraged over Mr. Marquez’s articles, let me
say this: the only person judging you right now is you. A news article is a
piece of paper. You can read a piece of paper and do nothing with what you’ve
read.
The saddest part is, Culture Corner isn’t even truly a news article! It’s just
an opinion. Everyone has an opinion about something, and he or she is the only
person able to change that opinion. Mr. Marquez is of a mind that people should
do their best to look their best. In that light, is his opinion hurtful in any
way?
I understand why the articles would bother some people. I also understand where
the author was coming from when the articles were written. The Culture Corner
is a person’s opinion on how an every day college student can access the finer
things in life. Red velvet cake, 1960’s movies, and how people dress are
included in this.
For those people out there who are hurt and angered by this column . . . you
shouldn’t be. The reality is, Culture Corner is only an opinion. It is not a
mandate ordering you to change your appearance. It is not requiring you to eat
healthier, dress nicely, or try red velvet cake. If you change your life
because of Culture Corner, I won’t say you’ve done a bad thing: it’s fairly good
advice. But you don’t have to alter a thing. That is the beauty of opinions.
Eagle readers, I challenge you! Form your own opinions, and don’t get so angry
over the opinions of others!
