Letter: Charlie Granade on ‘Sex sermons stimulate conversation’

Dear Editor:

I appreciate that The Eagle covered my talk last week. I also respect Sara Labor’s difference in opinion when it comes to this issue of sex before marriage.

What I don’t appreciate, however, was being misquoted as saying something I didn’t say. You make the following assertion in your article:

“Another thing that Granade said that I could not agree with is how women are the cause of all the trouble”… “He said that in the Bible, it is always women who start the trouble, and that it is the same today.”

I am not sure how you were able to draw the above conclusion from my talk. What I did say is that as Adam and Eve both bit the fruit, it was Adam who was held responsible, not Eve. I also said, in reference to Song of Solomon 2:5–7, which says:

5 Strengthen me with raisins,
refresh me with apples,
for I am faint with love.
6 His left arm is under my head,
and his right arm embraces me.
7 Daughters of Jerusalem, I charge you
by the gazelles and by the does of the field:
Do not arouse or awaken love
until it so desires.

that the woman here was ready to have sex (because of Solomon being so romantic) but that he needed to (and ultimately did) put on the brakes for the both of them.

I then went on to challenge the guys in the room that God will hold them more accountable for what they do and that they need to be the ones who need to make sure they don’t go too far. Finally, I mentioned that in reality it was usually the guys who were more pushy than the women.

Sincerely,

Charlie Granade,
Senior Pastor at Ridgeview Bible Church

Editor’s note: The Eagle editorial staff agrees that the use of “said” in Sara Labor’s commentary makes it unclear whether she intended to quote Granade by parahprasing or to present her interpretation of his message.

It was Labor’s intent to present her impression of Granade’s sermon and the Bible passages covered and not to present her words as a quote.

The Eagle staff greatly appreciates Pastor Granade taking the time to contribute his position to the conversation.

The third and final installment in Pastor Granade’s “Solomon on Sex” sermon series is 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Student Center ballroom. Admission for ages 18+ only.
