Education Week highlights diversity

The International Club is planning to host a series of cultural events next week.

International Education Week is a nationally-recognized event and an initiative of the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of State.

“The purpose of the events is to improve global awareness on campus and show the community how it can benefit from having international students on campus,” Iuliia Protopop, International Club sponsor, said.

Frances Gonzalez, International Club sponsor, said the events will give students a chance to share their cultures.

There are currently 54 international students enrolled at CSC, representing 23 different countries.

This is the third year in a row that the International Club has hosted a week of events. About 25 of the international students are involved in these events.

This year, the events will consist of more activities as opposed to presentations Christine Aye, senior of Burma, said.

The first event will be an international dance and quiz bowl, 9 p.m. Saturday in the Student Center ballroom. There will refreshments, prizes for quiz bowl winners, and dance music from Africa, the Caribbean, and South America.

The second event is a fashion show entitled “Styles all Over the World,” is planned for 7 p.m. Monday in the Student Center lounge. The students will wear traditional attire from their countries.

The next event, “Children Around the World,” is aimed at elementary-school-aged children.
About 55 elementary students from local schools will have a chance to participate in cultural activities in the Student Center ballroom 11 a.m. to 1p.m. Tuesday.

The next event, “Looking Back and Into the Future,” will be 7 p.m. Thursday in the Student Center ballroom.

“There will be a panel of international student alumni,” Gonzalez said.

She said that Skype will be used to contact international alumni who are no longer in Chadron.

For the final event of the week, students will collaborate with Sigma Tau Delta to present international poetry at the club’s “Just Words” Open Mic Night.

This event will also provide an opportunity for people in the community to socialize with the students.

The combined Open Mic Night is planned for 8 p.m. Nov. 19 at the Bean Broker Coffeehouse, located at 202 W. 2nd St.
