Women’s basketball readies for regular season

The Chadron State women’s basketball team held the Black Hills State Yellow Jackets to an 82-79 exhibition-game victory Tuesday evening in Armstrong Gym.

Although she fouled out in the fourth quarter, senior Kaitlin Petri of Kearney, was a key player finishing a team-high of 28 points, seven rebounds, four steals, four assists, and two blocks.

Lexi Smidt, sophomore of North Platte, also played a stellar game, finishing with 21 points, 18 of which were 3-point shots.

Additionally, Kattie Ranta, redshirt freshman of Rapid City, S.D., and Rachael Smidt, sophomore of North Platte, added 11 and 10 respectively.

The Yellow Jackets put up a solid fight and outscored the Eagles 50-39 in the second half. But the Eagles took the lead 76-73 over the Yellow Jackets in the fourth quarter even after Petri fouled out.

Freshman Jazmyn Webster, of Cheyenne, Wyo., made six of the team’s eight final free throws. Webster had a crucial steal with 15 seconds left and passed to Lexi Smidt, who shot the game winning free throw.

The Eagles shot a team 55.8 percent while the Yellow Jackets shot a 34.5 percent. The Eagles play their first regular reason game against the University of Mary Marauders at 6 p.m. Monday in Armstrong.
