Wrestling roulette: Black takes table

The wrestlers’ Red and Black dual brought in an impressive crowd Friday night at the Red and Black meet. Most of the matches determined the roster for the rest of the season.

The Black team’s Joe Bob Haas, redshirt freshman of Hemingford, opened the night with a win at the 197-pound class by pin at 5:38 seconds into the match against the Red team’s Josh Keating, freshman of Romeoville, Ill.

The next match was the Black team’s heavyweight wrestler R.J. Boylan, sophomore of Gillete, Wyo., won by pin 6:33 into the match over the Red team’s Ryley Dawson, freshman of Rawlins, Wyo.

The Black team sent out Justin Dekok, sophomore of Kearney, at the 165-pound class to face Red team’s Briston Brenton, junior of Casper, Wyo., Dekok won by a single point decision over Brenton, 3-2.

The 133-pound match was set between the Black team’s Dustin Stodola, sophomore of Clarkson, and Josh McCance, sophomore of Chadron. Stodola’s speed and strength on the mat gave the Black team the 7-4 win by decision.

The battle at the 149-pound class was between the Red team’s Jimmy Savala, senior of Clovis, Calif., and the Black team’s Lance Jeffries, sophomore of Loveland, Colo. Savala won over Jeffries with a major decision, 20-8 giving the Red Team its first points of the night.

The second match at the 149-pound class was Jake Lords, junior of Rexburg, Idaho won by injury default over Hagen Guzman, junior of Scottsbluff.

At 174-pounds, the Black team’s Trent Zempel, senior of Diamondville, Wyo., won by pin over the Red team’s Jake Hunter, redshirt freshman of Brush, Colo., 59 seconds into the match.

The Black team’s Jordan Debus, freshman of Mitchell, at the 184-pound match won by decision 8-2 over Jeremy Fillingame, sophomore of Hesperia, Calif.

At 197-pounds, the Red team’s Chris Leak, sophomore of Omaha, won by decision 6-2 over Haas.

The second match at 285-pounds was between the Red team’s Sam Udell, senior of Colorado Springs, Colo., and the Black team’s R.J. Boylan. Udell won by decision 4-2 over Boylan.

The final match of the night was Dekok’s second match of the night against the Black team’s Brian Easterling, junior of Omaha.

Dekok, tired from his first match, still managed to pull off another win with his decision over Easterling, 8-5.

The total team points for the Black team was 18 to the Red team’s 16 points, giving the Black team the victory.
