Trees give way to plaza

Work began Wednesday on the Centennial Plaza, a Vision 2011 construction initiative to develop a new feature on the Dean’s Green.

The plaza is planned to feature United States, Nebraska, and Chadron State College flags.

Preparations for the plaza include clearing a site on the green of several trees.

Fuller Construction of Chadron was contracted to cut down the trees and to remove the accompanying stumps and root systems as well.

The Fuller employee who wielded the chain saw pictured at right requested not to be photographed or identified owing to his personal feelings that the trees should stay.

Reclamation of the area, including cutting down several trees that were around 25 years old, began Wednesday morning, and continued into the afternoon.

Another Fuller employee working on cutting down the trees said the finished plaza will look similar to the circular area to the east of Old Admin.

In August, CSC President Janie Park said in addition to the Centennial Plaza, another Vision 2011 renovation initiative will include a new “formal entrance” to the campus, at 10th and Main streets.
