CAB hears presentations on Mardi Gras, possibilities for a CSC ‘lip dub’ video

Christine Aye, president, convened the meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Vice President Kyle Klammer was excused.

Luke Wright, treasurer, said the balance in CAB’s account is $16,346.43. Wright said that this amount include money carried-over from the fall semester as well as the allocation for spring semester.

Aye requested an allocation of no more than $1,800 for free movie night. This month’s free movie night is planned for 6:45 p.m. Sunday. Students must present their CSC ID.

Aye also requested that representatives solicit ideas for Spring Days themes or  activities.

“Spring Days is basically like homecoming without a football game,” Aye said.

Joseph Persac, assistant director for housing and residence life, addressed CAB with details of the developing plans for a CSC Mardi Gras celebration slated for Feb. 22-24.

Persac said the event would consist of three main pillars.

Shari Wattley, junior of Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, and Mercedes Roy, junior of Scotia, presented the first portion, which encompasses several activities to prep for the event fostered among the student body through resident advisers.

Wattley also introduced the idea of providing information about the Carnival celebration in Trinidad and Tobago. She said the differences and similarities of Mardi Gras and the Caribbean Carnival celebration would be emphasized.

Roy also spoke about turning the phrase “show your beads” into a vehicle for raising breast cancer awareness.

“Makes sense right?” Roy said.

Persac said the other pillars of the celebration would be a costume parade across campus, and a masquerade ball in the Student Center.

“I know there have been a lot of successful dances from The Pit, and that a formal is more difficult to put on, but it can be successful,” Persac said.

Josh Keating, freshman of Romeoville, Ill., gave a lengthy presentation on the merits of lip dub videos on YouTube as public relations for colleges and organizations.

“It’s an underground thing in the video world, but has gained a lot of notoriety lately,” Keating said.

Keating said anyone with ideas about a lip dub video could contact him at [email protected].

Wright and other executive board members passed out budget hearing letters and club account balance sheets.

Wright said things are being done a bit differently this year.

Clubs older than two years, and requesting less than $1,000 are not required to attend a budget hearing but will fill out a survey.
