Senate votes in two new clubs
Student Senate approved two new clubs and heard an update about the safe-rides program at its meeting Monday.
Kristina Harter, sophomore of Colorado Springs, Colo., represented the Public Relations Club to petition approval as a sanctioned campus club.
Harter said the group began as a department club with their first event being the soup kitchen program it sponsored in the fall.
Harter said the club’s goals include helping out other clubs and raising awareness of volunteer opportunities for students. Their future plan is to start a backpack program with the elementary school. They will send home boxed lunches for students in need.
Danny Fisher, freshman of Bennett, Colo., represented the Allies group. Fisher said the group intends to support lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning (LGBTQ) students and friends, as well as increase LGBTQ openness and awareness on campus.
The senate voted unanimously to approve both clubs.
Christine Aye, CAB president explained to both groups they have $100 and they will have to have a representative attend weekly Campus Activities Board meetings.
Trevor Dietrich, student trustee, reminded the senate of this week’s board of trustees meeting and asked for additional comments on the proposed change in required graduation credits. Dietrich reiterated that the change would only affect incoming freshman and would drop the amount of credits needed to graduate from 125 to 120.
Aye, announced that the International Club’s food tasting party is planned for 5 p.m. Feb. 12 in the Student Center. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and children. Tickets can be purchased from any International Club member.
Jacob Karmazin, president, said that the Safe Rides program is currently on hold pending the resolution of an insurance issue.
