The first “Just Words” Open Mic of the semester took place at the Bean Broker Coffee House Friday. The event was organized by the department of English and Humanities and hosted by Matthew Evertson, associate professor of the department of English and Humanities. The “Just Words” featured authors and readers performing literature pieces of different genres from haiku and poetry to prose.

The turnout for “Just Words” is usually smaller than that for the Mixed Mic. “It’s natural,” comments associate professor of the department of English and Humanities Lee Miller. Music and words interest more people than words only.

However, last semester there were more people attending Just Words. Miller explained that last semester he asked at least one of his students to perform at each event, which resulted in a larger turn-out.

After participating in the event, most of his students wrote in their reviews, “I didn’t think that I would have a good time, but I did have a good time.”

“It’s not part of the curriculum,” said Miller, and that is one of the reasons why not a lot of people go there.

“A seven-year-old wrote an original poem and read it at the Open Mic. If you don’t come, you miss out on things like that,” concluded Miller.

“Just Words” takes place on the first Friday of each month, and “Mixed Mic” takes place on the third Friday of each month. The event is free of charge and open for college students and community member to both attend and perform.
