Women earn first RMAC win

After a tough loss against Colorado State University-Pueblo on Friday, the Eagles played the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs Mountain Lions in Saturday’s game in the Armstrong Gymnasium.
Chadron made 20 of 26 shots in the second half which led the Eagles to their first RMAC win with a final score of 58-49, their fifth overall win of the season.
The first half of play featured the Mountain Lions cling to a lead between 1 and 6 points for the duration of the period as they entered half-time with a 24-18 lead over Chadron.
Neither team could find consistency with their outside shooting as the two teams combined for 3 shots made out of 11 from beyond the arc.
UCCS held a slight advantage overall with a 9-32 shooting mark over CSC’s 8-31 showing in the opening period.
CSC jumped on top early in the second half as Betsy Moler, sophomore of Rapid City, S.D., sank a basket followed by Jazmyn Webster, freshman of Cheyenne, Wyo., who added two free throws and another jumper. While the offense was executing, CSC’s defense was a key component and kept UCCS with 16-66 shots in the final half.
The teams traded baskets until a 7-0 lead by the Eagles, five of which were shot from the charity stripe.
While the Eagles stayed consistent, UCCS did not let up easy.
The Mountain Lions continued to chip away points and with just under four minutes left they closed the gap to a 1-point lead 48-47 after a steal and free throw made by Danielle Brown.
The Eagles pulled away quickly and managed to sink 10 more points before the final buzzer.
Lexi Smidt, sophomore of North Platte, led the team with 12 points while Marla Munsen, sophomore of Hershey, Neb., and Kada Williams, junior of Green River, Wyo., added 10 and 9 respectively. Webster, Munson, and Kelsey Scott, junior of Douglas, Wyo., had seven rebounds each.
Chadron State is schuled to host the Colorado School of Mines 6 p.m. Friday.
