Wrestlers add two more wins

The Eagle wrestlers defeated the Mesa State Mavericks 10-4 in the Nelson Physical Activity Center Thursday.

The Eagles immediately gave the Mavericks team points when Clay Flot, freshman of Kersey, Colo., won by forfeit in the 125-pound match, and Tyler Nelson, sophomore of Highlands Ranch, Colo., defeated Dustin Stodola, sophomore of Clarkson, 5-4.

Chadron State’s 141-pound Jimmy Savala, senior of Clovis, Calif., won by major decision over Berry Tack, junior of Cheyenne, Wyo., 16-3, and 149-pound Eagle wrestler Phillip Bullington, sophomore of Benson, Ariz., pinned Pat Lehnan, redshirt freshman of Douglas, Wyo., in only 1:38.

Eagles still down in team points, Chadron’s 157-pound wrestler Mikah Kadera, junior of Sheridan, Wyo., won his bout 3-2 over Jon Gappmaier, sophomore of Salt Lake City, N.M., putting the Eagles in the lead.

Briston Brenton, junior of Casper, Wyo., put more points on the board for the Eagles by winning the 165-pound match against Dylan Granard, redshirt freshman of Woodinville, Wash., 7-5.  Trent Zempel, senior of Diamondville, Wyo., followed the trend and won 3-2 in his 174-pound battle against Zak Slotten, freshman of Twin Falls, Idaho.

Mesa State finally fought back against Chadron’s five straight wins when 184-pound Kyle Brightman, junior of Cheyenne, Wyo., won by decision over Jordan Debus, freshman of Mitchell, 8-4.

The two final matches of the night went to the Eagles when 197-pound Chris Leak, sophomore of Omaha, defeated Shane Miller, senior of Gardnersville, Nev., 10-4, then Heavy Weight Sam Udell, senior of Colorado Springs, Colo., won by a 6 point decision over Miller, 10-4.

The Eagles also beat the Northern State University Wolves in Aberdeen, S.D., for a non-conference win. They will be in Sioux Falls, S.D., Friday for the Briar Cliff Open.
