Cross country treks across obstacles

At its Wednesday meeting, the NSCS Board of Trustees voted to approve the addition of a of a Division II NCAA men’s and women’s cross country program to Chadron State’s athletic offerings.
The college has been considering adding the program for several years, which would benefit the institution through better support of Title IX statutes, as well as the addition of an estimated 20 full time residential students.
According to board materials released by the NSCS, the “men’s track and field team at CSC had the highest cumulative GPA in the nation in Division II two years ago.” This statistic was used to highlight the benefits of the proposed program, as track athletes are often “some of the colleges [sic] best and brightest students academically.”
Joe Schultz, former track student-athlete and current graduate assistant for women’s basketball, said that the Athletics Department would be hiring a new full-time coach to support the development of the new program.
Schultz also said that the current year would be used for recruiting, and that the program would officially begin in the fall of 2012.
