Eagles ‘bear-ly’ defeat Grizzlies

Following a dramatic victory, the Eagles have momentum heading into their homecoming match-up against Colorado State-Pueblo this weekend. The game at Elliott Field features the 2-2 Eagles playing host to the undefeated Colorado State-Pueblo Thunderwolves.

Last weekend CSC matched-up against the Adams State College Grizzlies at home. With an exciting one point win, the Eagles have evened their season record and put themselves in a tie for first place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. In a game that featured mistakes by both teams, there was a fair share of excitement.

Michael Madkins (24) of Elk Grove, Calif., started the excitement with a 55-yard scamper for a touchdown. After that, the Eagles offense seemed to break. For the next two quarters the Adams State defense held the Eagles to zero points.

After tying the game, the Thunderwolves had their own offensive problems. From that point on, the game became one of mistakes. With 17 penalties, three turnovers, and six punts, neither team could find their way to the end zone.

It wasn’t until the middle of the fourth quarter when Adams State kicker, David Van Voris (39), a junior from Elizabeth, Colo., was able to hit a 38-yard field goal to break the tie. CSC was unable to answer with a score of their own and found themselves down six after Van Voris connected again from 34.

With about two-and-a-half minutes left, the Eagles most likely were down to their last possession. After muffing the punt, Madkins returned the kickoff to mid-field and gave the Eagles great field position to begin their drive. After an incompletion, junior Brandon Gorsuch (10), of Rapid City, S.D., found senior Jeff Alcorn (84) of Chadron, on two consecutive passes to get down to the 22-yard line. A holding penalty against Adams State gave the Eagles a first-down and put them on the 12-yard line. Two plays later Gorsuch hit senior Jeremy Sondrup (89), of Pleasant Grove, Utah, for what would prove to be the game winning score.

The Thunderwolves would have one more chance with 1:09 remaining. Adams state quickly drove down-field and set themselves up for a game-winning field goal. With four seconds on the clock, Van Voris’ kick sailed wide-left and gave the Eagles the win.
