CSC President, Janie Park, tasked Brad Smith, director of athletics, with coaching the college’s football team for the remainder of the season while the NCAA performs an investigation into possible football fundraising violations.

Though Smith is replacing Bill O’Boyle as head football coach for the remainder of the season, O’Boyle is still employed, Alex Helmbrecht, sports information director, said in a video interview with Smith on Tuesday. In the same interview, Smith said that the situation, though unfortunate as it is occurring mid-season, would allow O’Boyle to focus on the ongoing NCAA investigation.

The email announcement came at 3:17 p.m. on Monday from the Sports Information Office. In the notice, Park said “Brad will take the necessary steps to assure that the CSC football program will continue its tradition of excellence and to end the season on a positive note.”

Smith will balance his role as athletic director along with his new coaching responsibilities, the release stated.

Smith previously served as Chadron State’s head football coach from 1987-2004, when he resigned the position to assume the role of director of athletics.

“No way I’m going to try to replace coach O’Boyle, or even step into his shoes. I want to be there for these kids,” Smith said.
