Eagles prey upon Skyhawks, 45-21

Despite all the distractions surrounding the NCAA investigation into CSC’s football program, the Eagles football team is staying focused and has been on a bit of a roll lately. The team won its third straight game Saturday, upending the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks of Fort Lewis, Colo., 45-21 at Elliot Field.
After a sloppy start that included a fumbled punt return that set up a Skyhawks touchdown, the Eagles found themselves down 6-0 early in the first quarter. But the Skyhawk defense could not contain CSC’s offensive attack.
Midway through the opening quarter, quarterback Brandon Gorsuch, junior of Rapid City, S.D., engineered a 10-play, 67-yard scoring drive capped off with a 4-yard touchdown pass to inside receiver Cody Roes, junior of Chadron.
That was the first of two touchdowns that the Gorsuch-to-Roes tandum would score.
On the day, the two hooked up nine times for 104-yards.
With about two and a half minutes left in the first half, CSC got the ball back and a chance to pad its lead. The Eagles drove seven plays in just more than two minutes when Gorsuch hit Roes for the second touchdown between them, making it 21-9. On the drive Gorsuch went 5-for-5 for 59 yards.
It appeared the Eagles would go into halftime with a 21-9 lead, but after a quick, five-play drive, the Skyhawks kicked a field goal as time expired to make it 21-12 at halftime.
In the second half the Eagles started off slowly—on their first possession the Skyhawk defense held them to minus 10 yards on three plays, before scoring a safety. That made it a 7-point game at 21-14. On Fort Lewis’ subsequent drive, they traveled 62-yards and tied the game at 21-21.
In the final quarter, CSC scored 17 unanswered points. A 2-yard run by sophomore Glen Clinton, of Cody, Wyo., another touchdown pass by Gorsuch, and a 36-yard field goal by Ferdinand – giving the Eagles a 45-21 victory.
Gorsuch led much of the offensive fireworks, completing 24 of 36 passes for 250 yards and four touchdowns. Roes caught 9 passes for 104 yards and two touchdowns, while Clinton carried 17 times for 79 yards and a touchdown.
Next week the Eagles travel to Golden, Colo., to square off against Colorado School of Mines.
Kickoff is noon at Campbell Field. CSC and Mines are tied for third in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, each holds a 5-2 conference record. The Orediggers have a 7-2 record on the season; the Eagles are 5-4.
