Library improvements focus of Senate’s debate
At Monday’s meeting, Senate members reviewed Halloween events’ success and the library renovation.
Treasurer T.J. Thomson said there is $12,805 in unallocated funds.
Luke Wright, CAB president, said that the attendance for the Halloween festivities, such as the Haunted House and All Hallows Ball were more than previous years.
The main topic of discussion for the meeting, however, was ideas for the Reta E. King Library renovations to pass on to Lois Veath, vice president for academic affairs.
In lieu of last week’s meeting, Senate members were taken on a tour of the library to view progress and discuss probable plans for the renovation.
With that new knowledge, members discussed what they wanted to see happen.
A hotly debated point was if the tutoring center ought to be moved out of the current ProjectStrive location, where would an appropriate relocation area be.
As the idea was tossed around, some members decided the best place would be in the basement. This was assumed to be ideal because it would be in a bigger area where each subject matter could have its own meeting place.
However, Joseph Reedy, senator of B.E.A.M.S.S., who used to be a tutor, disagreed.
He said it would be beneficial to have tutors and students nearer to library staff, and make finding materials easier.
Another idea brought up was advances in technology. One idea was an all-encompassing “SMART” card, one card that would include all costs; for example, books, food, and the NPAC.
A second topic was opening more printing facilities throughout campus. As discussed during several meetings last semester.
A majority of senators agreed the “SMART” cards were the more important idea.
Vice President James Bahenksy said the ideas shared were very helpful and was excited to pass them on to the library renovation staff.
“We’ve had some really good input,” he said.
