Chadron State’s Athletics Department hosted a press conference 2 p.m., Feb. 9 in the Ballroom of the Student Center to answer questions and introduce Jay Long, CSC’s recently-hired head football coach, to the broader campus and community.

The meeting was streamed live via the college’s athletics website, and archived footage is available on the college’s YouTube profile.

After a short introduction by Brad Smith, CSC’s athletics director, Long took the podium and spoke for slightly more than 12 minutes about his personal history and his goals for Chadron State football.

Long offered two priorities for CSC football. The first was to graduate players.

“The GPA here is amazing and a lot higher than the other colleges that I have visited.  It is amazing and our guys will get a degree that is why we are here and that is most important,” Long said.

The second priority Long said was to outwork their opponents.

“Effort and outworking our opponent is how we get it done,” Long said.

Questions from the crowd composed the final six minutes of the conference.

The Eagle’s two questions, and the subsequent answers were:

The Eagle:  What are some areas you want improvement?

Long: We will come in to work hard.  The guys are excited for a head coach and we are excited to move forward.

The Eagle: What do you think of the possibility the NCAA sanctions the football team?

Long: I am here to coach football and no matter what happens I will be here to coach my players and play football.
