Meteorite discovered by professor to be centerpiece in University of Lincoln Gallery
A football-shaped meteorite, weighing 165 pounds, will be on display in the Cooper Gallery of Morril Hall at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Feb. 24.
The late Art Struempler, former chair of CSC’s Science and Mathematics division, came upon the meteorite in 1982 while rummaging through a junk pile on his family farm near Bayard. The meteorite was documented as one of 2,600 found in the world. After conducting research and writing multiple articles on it, he sent samples of the meteorite to scientists in Iowa, New Mexico, England, and Germany for analysis. Struempler passed away in August of 2004. The Art Struempler Flag Plaza, located north of the Math and Science Building, is named in his honor.
