Search for academic dean continues with revisions

Chadron State’s seven-member search committee reopened the search for dean of Teaching and Learning and Liberal Arts, after the college closed the search this past week, according to an administrative representative.

Joel Hyer, dean of B.E.A.M.S.S. and Curriculum and Academic Advancement, said Wednesday afternoon that the search committee recommended closing the search after the committee determined neither candidate was a good fit for CSC.

Chadron State President Janie Park, future Vice President of Academic Affairs Charles Snare, and Vice-Chancellor for Academic Planning and Partnerships Lois Veath approved the committee’s recommendation.

“Neither of the candidates met the specifications of the job to our specifications,” Hyer said.

Hyer added that the original vacancy announcement was revised, forwarded to Human Resources, and the new announcement will be posted soon.

Committee member Bob Knight, assistant professor of the Communication and Social Sciences Department, said Wednesday afternoon that the initial vacancy announcement was focused more on the teaching and learning portion of the position than on the dean of liberal arts position.

“We feel the job description didn’t stress the dean of liberal arts enough,” Knight said.

Knight said the committee clarified that language and emphasized liberal arts in its revised vacancy announcement.
