Campus Activities Board

CAB gears up for start of semester, updates clubs on changes

The Campus Activities Board recapped its procedures and the Nebraska State College System Board of Trustees’ policy changes at its first meeting of the academic year Tuesday.

Vice President Lane Swedberg started off by explaining the CAB’s function. Swedberg said that the CAB is for sharing activities and communicating between clubs. He asked that each representative bring back reports to their advisers so a club adviser can tell students about the activities on campus. “That way everybody can learn about our campus,” Swedberg said.

Swedberg also said that another member needs to be elected to the executive board. CAB will be taking nominations and letters of intent for a publicity coordinator starting next week.

Secretary Karly Watson said that clubs are allowed no more than two unexcused absences during the course of the academic year. She asked that representatives fill out a contact sheet and include the phone number and email address of the CAB representatives and the alternate representative. Emails with the minutes and the agenda will be sent to both every week.

Morgan Nelson, student trustee, spoke about the June NSCS Board of Trustee’s meeting. She said that there were several policy changes in the policy manual, and went over three of them. One policy having to do with sexual harassment had been changed, which Nelson encouraged everyone to take a closer look at as “we live on a college campus, it does happen.” She also said that a new policy for clubs on campus includes that new advisers have to be approved. The final change she spoke about was that fundraised funds have to be maintained off campus starting Dec. 31. Nelson said that Student Senate is currently working on a solution to implement the board’s changes.

Aaron Prestwich, the new Interim Executive of Student Affairs spoke to the CAB about his role. Prestwich said that he oversees housing, health services, the NPAC, and other student affairs. He said that he is looking forward to being involved in CAB and congratulated everyone involved. “I commend you all for being involved in a club. It’s really important for student life. You provide the campus life, and fun, safe activities.” He said that being involved in campus life is one of the aspects that help students stay in college.

Kellie Aye said that CAB has $10,250 in un-allocated funds. Aye also said that if a club does not remember how much money they have in their accounts to see her.

T.J. Thomson, student senate vice president, extended a welcome from student senate. Thomson said that this year senate will be increasing student involvement by bringing in dorm representatives.

Elections will be Aug. 29 and 30, and one representative will be voted in from each dorm. Thomson encouraged everyone to consider getting involved in Student Senate.

Laure Sinn announced Find The Flamingo. Flamingos are located in many businesses and offices on campus and in town. Students get stamps in their passports, which will help them get their names in a drawing for an iPad. Sinn encouraged everyone to get involved in the program as it is a good way to look into offices and businesses and see what they are all about.
