McLain, Gorsuch team up to fill quarterback position

The Eagles football team is getting more excited as the season opener against Montana State University nears.

While NFL coaches have to decide on who to put in the quarterback position, Chadron State College’s head football coach Jay Long already knows his starting player. John McLain, sophomore of Chadron, was injured in the season opener against University of Mary with a concussion. Then in the next game against San Angelo, McLain broke a bone in his wrist and was out for the season. Taking over for him was Brandon Gorsuch, senior of Rapid City, S.D. Gorsuch threw for over 2,000 yards last season. Now that McLain is finally healed, the quarterback position needs to be filled and there are two great athletes to fill the spot.

“John is a great leader and will do well starting at quarterback. I know that if I need to put Brandon in I can always count on him. We have great depth at quarterback this season,” Long said. After playing almost a total of four quarters last year, McLain is excited to get back into the game.

“I am a bit nervous after being out for almost a season, but more excited than anything.” Brandon Gorsuch does not have any hard feelings towards the switch from last year.

“I’ve had over a season to prove myself to the coaches and I respect any decision they make,” Gorsuch said. McLain was also recently elected as one of the captains for the 2012 season by the Eagle football team. With his injuries last season, he red-shirted, making him eligible for two more seasons. The other captains are senior inside receive Keifer Burke of Brady, senior linebacker Kevin Lindholm of Eads, Colo., senior inside receiver Cody Roes of Chadron, and junior safety Trelan Taylor of La Mesa, Calif.

“All the captains are great leaders for our team,” Long said.
