Get off your duff, do stuff
All of us have been in school for about four weeks now, and hopefully everyone’s settled in pretty well. We all know our routine, the amount of time to spend on homework, and how to arrange our schedules around our class periods. But some people are claiming that they have nothing to do, and that life in Chadron and on campus is boring. Well, if one’s idea of free time is spending it on Facebook, YouTube, or Pinterest (not to say that it isn’t tempting), then yes, life here can be pretty dull. And that is all the more reason that people need to get off of their derrière and take part in all of the clubs, activities, and projects going around campus.
Take clubs, for starters. Who hasn’t heard someone say, “There’s just no club here that I fit in with,” or something similar? Really now. Chadron State College has 68 clubs listed on its website, ranging from hands-on groups like Ag or Outdoor Adventures, to religious groups like Revive and Chi Alpha. Usually every major has at least one club associated with it anyway, so there’s no real excuse to not have at least one club to join.
Activities are another aspect of college life that no one can reasonably avoid. Almost every week RLA or some club is offering something. The Pit offers Late Night at The Pit every Thursday night, be it a dance or a tournament. Even this week, events like Pool Tournament and the Kent Hall Kegger are taking place. Whether or not a certain activity is to your liking, it’s still worth taking part in and enjoying the company of friends and colleagues.
Sports may not be for everyone, but it is still worth a person’s time to enjoy the social pleasures of a game. Even tryouts for a team or squad can be enjoyable, for the one participating and the onlookers.
Lastly, you can try and get a job or volunteer. This can help a student gain valuable work experience and on-the-job training for future work.
The possibilities are endless, and it can happen if you are willing to shut down the computer and get moving.
