Eagles race into first
Chadron State women’s cross country team made their mark once again on Friday at Black Hills State. They have won their second meet in a row, with placing five runners in the top eight both times. The point gap was smaller than the week before, 26 to 29 as opposed to 19 to 39 difference . It still puts a tally in the win category for the Eagles.
Ashley Riesen, senior of Chadron, placed first for the Eagles and came in second overall with a time of 16 minutes and 25 seconds. Freshman of Alliance, Jayme Nunes came in third behind her teammate with a time of 16:46.
CSC men’s team didn’t fair as well as the women’s did. Their first runner to cross the line was Domingo Torres, freshman of Gering, with a time of 21 minutes and 56 seconds. Coming in next was Doug Harris, freshman of Las Vegas, Nev., finishing the course in 22 minutes and 49 seconds. The men’s team hasn’t been having the same results as the women’s for a number of reasons.
“Our men’s team is learning to run together, especially the freshmen. They also have a bigger learning curve as they go from running a 5K in highschool to a 10K in college” Baily said.
CSC ran against South Dakota School of Mines for their first dual at the beginning of September. The women’s team won that dual while the men came in last by 21 points. Coach Baily is hopeful that this time will be a different story.
“Our girls beat them the first go around, and both our teams have more experience now so we should run closer to them,” Baily said.
CSC competes against South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City, S.D.
