Rodeo lopes homeward
Chadron State College is set to host their only home rodeo of the season this weekend from Friday to Sunday at the Dawes County Fairgrounds, and CSC Rodeo coach Dustin Luper is excited. “It’s kind of like a homecoming game in football” Luper said. ”You get that advantage of knowing your home field.”
Despite losing a lot of last year’s seniors, Coach Luper remains optimistic about his new prospects for the season. The team is comprised of a mix of freshmen, seasoned transfer students, and returning CSC students. “The new people are starting to get their legs underneath them” said Luper. “We are focusing a lot on getting three to four people stacked on each event and on getting them to relax when they make it to the short round on Sunday.”

The team opened the 2012-2013 rodeo season by competing in Riverton, Wyo. last weekend, which was hosted by Central Wyoming College. That rodeo allowed the Eagle cowboys and cowgirls to mark their standings for the Central Rocky Mountain Region.
The CSC men’s team is currently tied in seventh place with Central Wyoming College with 170 points. Sulphur, La. native Colton Blanchard, a transfer student from Dodge City Community College, took fourth place in Bareback Riding with 80 points, and Lane Day, sophomore of Bartlett, took fifth in Calf Roping with 90 points.
The CSC women’s team holds fourth in the region at 260 points thanks to a pair of transfer cowgirls. Amy Tierney of Oral, S.D., a transfer from Northeastern Junior College, took third in Barrell Racing with 120 points. Shelby Winchell of Scottsbluff and transfer student from Eastern Wyoming College took second in the goat tying event with 140 points. Winchell is noted for having finished second in the region and third in the nation for goat tying last year, and Coach Luper is looking for her to be National Champion this year.
Make sure you make it out to the fairgrounds this weekend and support the Eagles Rodeo Team before they head back out on the road for the remainder of the season.
