Time to choose the lesser of two evils

Quite often I overhear people saying that they’re voting for President Obama, or see pro-Obama clothes and accessories.

Personally, I do not plan on voting Obama-Biden, despite the fact that I grew up with welfare the majority of my life, and also am a student of color. Now, that isn’t to discredit the good nominees that President Obama has nominated, as there are a handful of individuals who deal with Native American affairs who I’ve had the privilege of getting to know. But I hold the belief that it’s time for the country to have someone who isn’t a seasoned lawyer become president, and if that individual is an experienced businessman, then so be it.

Being a former Obama supporter, I’ve found that one issue that came up in 2008 can no longer apply in this election, and that’s the topic of race. One of my colleagues from this summer mentioned that if President Obama doesn’t win another term it will be because of his race. That doesn’t make any sense; he’s already president, so race can’t be an issue anymore.

The biggest accomplishment during his presidency, what he’ll be forever remembered for, is the killing of Osama Bin Laden (though that’s also largely thanks to SEAL Team 6 and the CIA). He is also one of the biggest advocates of authorizing drone attacks, which is ironic considering he won the Nobel Peace Prize just days into his presidency. At the same time, the economy has been at one of the lowest points in history under his leadership, though that isn’t entirely his fault (it’s also the Bush administration’s fault).

I’m not trying to say people should vote for the Romney-Ryan ticket either. Because as is the case with virtually every presidential election, individuals have to choose between what they consider the lesser of two evils. Obama has some pretty solid Native American policies, despite the fact that I still have yet to hear about him visiting a Native American reservation. Romney is a proven businessman, and a religious man, although I don’t agree with the Mormon faith.

Personally, I’m planning on voting for who I view to be the lesser of the two evils, Romney-Ryan. Now some will disagree with me, but I will respond by saying: Can the nation go any farther downhill than it already has and still be a democracy? Certainly. Looking at things from this perspective gives a businessman a better chance to win than a lawyer. If he’s given four years and he doesn’t prove himself, then guess what? When 2016 comes around with a better crop of Democrats you can choose to boot out Romney-Ryan (if they get elected at all). This is the beauty of government. Now bureaucracy, on the other hand, that’s an entirely different story.

Some could say that this state is going to go red no matter what, and they’ve probably got a good point there, but one doesn’t have much room to complain unless he or she votes. I’ve chosen my lesser of two evils, everyone else must soon choose theirs.
