For the third consecutive year, a group of ROTC cadets joined students, faculty, and staff in commemorating those who have served in the nation’s armed forces.

In order to avoid Monday morning’s frigid temperatures, the event was moved from its initial location at the Centennial Flag Plaza to the Mari Sandoz Center’s Chicoine Atrium.

The roughly 10-minute ceremony included remarks by cadets as well as ROTC officers.

Lt. Franklin Annis tasked those in attendance to reach out to those who have served and hear their stories.

“This day, as you go out, I ask you to remember those that have fallen, those that are still yet to be accounted for, and most importantly I encourage you to remember those that are still living,” Annis said. “Ask them to share their stories with you. Come to understand the challenges they face and the troubles they went through in defense of their country.”

Veterans Day was first celebrated in the United States through a presidential decree by President Woodrow Wilson, though it was then known as Armistice Day.
