Senate discusses audits

State audits were the main topic of discussion at this week’s Student Senate meeting.

Aaron Prestwich, interim executive director of student life, said that he was recently contacted by the Auditor of Public Accounts, or APA, and asked for a list of student organizations and their advisors. Prestwich said that if a club or organization is contacted about funds by the APA, they do not have to give out any information about their funds.

T.J. Thomson, vice president asked if Student Senate wanted to make a decision whether or not they would give out information on funds if contacted by the APA. Many of the students agreed if asked, senate should use their right to tell the APA they do not have to provide information.

Student Senate also discussed the presidential candidates currently interviewing on campus. The two candidates are Guy Mills and Randy Rhine. At Monday’s Senate meeting, James Bahensky, president, said that about 30 people attended the student forum for Mills. Both Bahensky and Morgan Nelson, Student Trustee, encouraged students to attend Rhine’s forum.

In other business, Bahensky brought up the issue of parking passes. Bahensky said that Wayne has to buy parking permits and pays $40 for students and faculty. Bahensky said that at Chadron State, parking passes are included in fees, however, as some students don’t drive cars, they are paying for a fee that they don’t use.

In another matter, Marlee Waugh, senator of B.E.A.M.S.S., said that she spoke to Dale Grant about the plans for the new pool. Waugh said that there are currently two plans being discussed. One is that the pool be on the south side of the PAC. The pool would be five lanes, which, according to Waugh, is an awkward size. It would also be about $2.2 million.

Waugh said the other option is that the school rent the existing city pool and use it both as a school pool and a city pool. Waugh said this is the best option currently, as it would be cheaper and would not cost any more student fees. The City Council is meeting to discuss the idea.
