Student Senate

Senate congested with parking talks

senateA proposal for open parking and possible change in parking fees and fines was the main discussion of Senate’s Monday meeting.

James Bahensky, student Senate president, introduced the proposal. To begin, he briefly introduced general student discussions such as washing machines deteriorating, online technology becoming a headache, and a sauna in the Nelson Physical Activity Center. Bahensky opened the discussion with an open parking proposal, increasing parking fees, and increasing the fine for repeat parking violators. He then opened it up to senate discussion.

Senator of Andrews, Jacob Rissler, said helping students understand the rules of when and where they are allowed to park could be beneficial and help raise awareness of the issue. Rissler suggested upping parking fees to $40; “It’s a reasonable fee for a parking pass for the year.” An overall agreement for parking fines was that for every offense the amount increases. The first offense would start at $20 or $25, the second ticket is $50 and every offense after will be $100. The cap at $100 would be for every parking offense after the second one. Instead of starting fresh every year at $25 for the first offense, at the beginning of each school year students would start from where they were at the end of the year before.

The proposal for open parking on campus led to the idea of having open parking Monday thru Friday from 5 p.m.-7 a.m. T.J. Thomson, Senate vice president, introduced the idea of doing a trial run with the open parking to see the response. Also, the idea of separate parking for motorcycles was brought up by Rissler.

In other news senate allocated $3,400 for the new equipment for the NPAC.

CAB’s Tuesday meeting began with Kellie Aye, CAB Treasurer, discussing budget packets for clubs being due Feb. 25. A motion to allocate $2,000 for free movie night Sunday was moved and passed. Normally only $1,800 is allocated but a 3D movie will be playing, so more money is needed to cover the cost.

Laure Sinn, Coordinator of Student Activities, reminded CAB members that Charley Sampson will be in Memorial Hall Thursday, Feb. 21, in recognition of Black History Month.
