Attitude, not shoes, make an outfit

I was once told that fashion is the clothes you buy and style is what you do with it, proof that anyone can purchase clothing, but it takes more than money to have style. If you are shaking your head in disagreement, quickly recall your junior high wardrobe. That may have been “fashion” but it was far from style. Gaucho pants, heeled flip-flops, and choker necklaces are the only evidence I need.

If you are currently wearing gaucho pants, heeled flip-flops, and/or a choker necklace please don’t plot my disappearance yet. The focus of this column won’t be solely on fashion, and I promise the junior high flashbacks will be kept to a minimum. Instead, this column will be focused on not only inspiring style, but inspiring the confidence to unleash personality through the threads.

Wearing clothes takes no effort (unless they are skinny jeans, in that case the “lunge and tug” plan is put into effect). Being bold enough to have your own style is where boundaries are broken. The worst fashion crime a female can commit is being fearful of her style because of other’s opinions. No outfit is complete without confidence, no matter how “fashionable” it may be.

Piecing an outfit together based on your “Dream Closet” board on Pinterest and your real closet to make something uniquely you, that my friend is style. I’ve seen outfits on people that would normally make me repulsed and trigger my gag reflex. However, the way a person wears the outfit can change my viewpoint from nausea to approval. If you are confident enough to work gaucho pants, heeled flip-flops, and/or a choker necklace, I applaud you.

Seeing a girl’s attitude in an outfit, not because of the amount of money spent on it or the time put into creating it, but because of how the clothes make her feel is exactly why fashion and style exist.  If you’re thinking this concept is shallow and materialistic, maybe it is, but who are we to judge what makes someone feel good?  If style gives you the confidence you need to survive the day, then rock the outfit. If people think it’s shallow, they’ve obviously never had a fabulous pair of shoes.

Before judging the theory of style, devote one day to letting your inner style speak, one day of pure confidence in what you like, simply because you like it. We often get so caught up worrying about what is expected of us that we forget what we expect from ourselves. After all, Cinderella is proof that a new pair of shoes can change your life.
