Deep in the bowels of Chadron State’s Kent Hall lies the CSC Theatre Department’s well-kept secret. Rows on rows of clothes, shoes, and bags line every wall, and between the rows of plaid skirts, military uniforms, and carrot costumes, a group of theater students tackle blouses and trousers with measuring tapes.

The Theatre Department’s costume shop has been located in the basement of Kent Hall for more than 20 years, Scott Cavin, assistant professor of visual and performing arts, said.

“It was there when I got here,” Cavin said.

Hannah Norgard, former CSC theater major, currently supervises the costume shop. Norgard has worked with costumes for eight years, though not always for CSC. Her experience is evident in her anecdotes, which she shares with those working in the shop. Her fellow employees have become familiar with Norgard joking that blood on a costume is good luck.

“My favorite part is actually problem solving,” Norgard said.

Currently, the costume department is working on putting together costumes for the Theatre Department’s upcoming production of “Almost, Maine.”
