Student senate weighs constitutional changes

Senate’s Monday meeting began with Andrews Hall Senator Jacob Rissler discussing proposed changes to the Student Senate Constitution.

Rissler discussed adding the student trustee position and senate’s CAB representative to the senate executive board.

The other major change would be to the presidential veto. The president will only be allowed to veto something once. Right now the president has the choice to veto one item three times.

Along with the veto, senators are allowed to override the president’s veto with a two-thirds vote.

A few smaller changes will occur and Morgan Nelson, student trustee, asked that the position of student trustee be called such in the constitution.

It was moved and passed that the document be reviewed and voted on in the next student senate meeting.

Student Senate sponsor Aaron Prestwich, executive director of student life, said the proposal for an ice machine in Edna has been rejected. There is no place in Edna that meets the requirements for an ice machine. Sanitation costs are also an issue. Prestwich says it is costly to keep the machine in Kent working and clean.

If students would still like ice the idea of an icebox could be possible. Students would purchase a bag of ice from an icebox like ones found at convenience stores.

In CAB’s Tuesday meeting, CAB President Dani Buckley, said nominations for executive board positions are being pushed back a week due to Spring Break.

CAB passed an allocation of $250 for Scholastic Day, a school-wide event on April 5. Volunteers are needed to help out during Scholastic Day and interested parties can contact Laure Sinn in the Student Center.

James Bahensky, senate president, ended the meeting by asking CAB member what they thought about budget hearings. Most members responded to being interested in the final outcome of the budget hearings.

If clubs wish to appeal and believe they should receive more money, they may do so. Appeals will be taking place next week, on Thurs. April 4 at 3 p.m. in the student center.
