Education is CSC’s most popular major

Popularity contests aside, education is still the top major on campus. Chadron State College confers the highest number of degrees on education majors; no surprise from a campus that started as a teaching college in 1911. The runner-up for most majors is business administration according to materials from the Nebraska State College System Board of Trustees’ March 15 meeting.
“CSC does an excellent job at preparing the elementary majors with the tools they will need to succeed,” Jesse Sealey, associate professor of education, said. “We prepare our students with real-life opportunities to help them excel after graduation.”
The graduating class of 2012 yielded 24 elementary education graduates, showing the potential of a 79 percent full-time job placement rate, according to the CSC Career and Academic Planning Services report, completed in 2011.
“It means a great deal to us that we were not only the most popular major, but that we have maintained such a strong reputation to build on and attract such quality candidates,” Sealey said.
Business administration graduated 17 students in its undergraduate and graduate programs; a number that may continue to rise. The business department launched the Business Academy in the spring of 2007. Combining eight-week hybrid classes on campus and a full catalog of business options, this accredited business program can accommodate students anywhere.
“This combination of high quality programs and low tuition cost is proving to be a winner for students,” August Bruehlman, associate professor of management, said.
The CSC Career and Academic Planning Services report shows that students receiving a degree in the graduate business administration program at CSC have a 70 percent full-time job placement rate.
“Business has traditionally been a popular choice for students due to its flexibility and post-graduation employment opportunities. We increasingly have students enrolled from all over the world,” Bruehlman said. “This diverse mix of cultures and ideas provides a powerful and engaging learning experience.”
The fewest number of graduates in 2012 came from the justice studies, social science and communication arts programs. Justice studies and social science each graduated two students while the communication arts program graduated one.

The “Education is CSC’s most popular major” article that ran in the April 11 edition of The Eagle only included graduates from the fall semester in its calculations and thus did not accurately represent the most and least popular majors. The totals from both semesters for the listed majors are as follows: business administration–58; elementary education–57; justice studies–13; history–3.
