Senate swears in members; CAB considers changes

Senate swore in 13 new members at the Monday meeting.

Each dorm hall was represented, filling five of the positions. The eight remaining positions were filled by seven senators and one faculty advisor. Nathan Gallegos, a new assistant business professor, replaced James Wada as one of three faculty advisors. Jon Lordino, chief justice, reported five still-vacant senate positions. Students interested should contact an executive board member.

“Senate will have an  amazing year this year,” Senate President Jacob Rissler said.

Soon students will have one less password to remember, Chief Information Officer Ann Burke said. IT is changing Office 365, or Eaglemail, to log in with the student’s campus computer log-in. The switch will occur Tuesday at 6 a.m.

Senate Vice President Nate Jones brought up the issue of firearms storage for students. It is illegal to store firearms in vehicles and dorms on campus. A group of people are attempting to find a place off campus for students to store firearms during school. There is currently no place lined up for storage.

Senate is investigating the purchase of equipment to produce “Senate In a Minute” videos, since the equipment being used will soon be unavailable.

Discussion of the new Senate Finance Committee was brought up by Rissler. The committee will consist of nine members and two co-chairs who will have no voting right.

Rissler asked senators if there were any ideas for War Memorial Park, which was brought up last week. The park will keep Frisbee golf and redo the tennis courts.

Senate will not meet Monday due to Labor Day. It will resume Monday, Sept. 9.

Changes in the CAB constitution and the implementation of new ideas have CAB Chair Lane Swedberg “looking to the future.”

In the meeting Tuesday, a new seating arrangement which is currently under consideration, was discussed. A suggestion included a round table setting so the club representatives could get more involved with each other. The arrangement would allow for a five to ten minute focus team to exchange their ideas for possible improvements on campus.  Another improvement includes a monthly CAB newsletter that will contain a recap of the previous month and a preview for the next month. CAB executive board welcomes any new ideas for improvement.

Swedberg announced a change in the CAB constitution that says money will be allocated on a quarterly basis. With this change, clubs can receive more funding for an event if they contact CAB executive board by Oct. 1.

CAB members were asked to volunteer for two committee positions, if interested. One of the positions available to the students is on the homecoming committee and the other is on the diversity committee. If club members are interested, they need to contact Swedberg or Director of Student Activities Laure Sinn for more information.

Wrapping up the meeting, Swedberg reminded the representatives that CAB has a three absence rule that started Tuesday with everyone having a clean slate, excluding the clubs that were not present.
