It took an interception in double overtime for the Eagles to win their Sept. 5 season opener against Missouri University of Science and Technology, in Rolla.

The winning score came when CSC cornerback Lane Haller, junior of Gordon, picked off S&T quarterback Reed Brown, sophomore of Rogers, Ark., and returned the ball 79 yards to put the final score at 40-34.

It was Haller’s second interception of the game; his first came in the fourth quarter. He also tallied eight solo tackles. In a press release, CSC Sports Information Director Alex Helmbrecht wrote that Haller’s performance earned him two separate honors – Nebraska Division II Defensive Player of the Week and Beyond Sports Network’s Player of the Week.

Leading to the overtime, CSC trailed the Miners, 27-20, with less than three minutes left in the fourth quarter when tailback Glen Clinton, senior of Cody, Wyo., broke loose on a 55-yard run to put the Eagles deep into Miner’s territory.

Junior quarterback Jonn McLain of Chadron, then hit senior inside receiver Cody Roes, also of Chadron, in the end zone with a 12-yard touchdown pass to knot the score at 27 with 44 seconds remaining.

Roes scored again quickly in overtime, this time on a 7-yard pass play. Later, Missouri S&T answered with a 1-yard touchdown.  At the end of the first overtime the teams were tied again at 34. In the second overtime with S&T driving deep inside Eagles Territory, Haller intercepted Brown and scored on that 79-yard return.
