Senate discusses advising week; CAB welcomes new club

Student Senate is looking to improve adviser and advisee relationships.

Student Senate Adviser, Dr. Susan Schaeffer said, “Big things are happening,” and at the end of October there will be an Advising Week, complete with different kiosks to help students get ready for next semester’s registration.

One change that will help this process will be changing relations between advisers and their students. Many freshmen generally don’t have a set adviser when they get to CSC, but they have the START Team set as their adviser. Some students feel that this is impersonal and they feel uncomfortable or disconnected. Schaeffer will be working to get everybody an adviser.

CAB Chair Lane Swedberg also mentioned students need to be aware that they can apply for an adviser. This can be done on CSC’s website, or in the START Office.

Another topic that was brought up again was the off-campus weapon storage. Vice President Nate Jones is trying to get a report together to take to the City Council in October.

In other news, senate is also getting involved with the Library Coffee Shop opening next month. To help launch the shop, senate is encouraging faculty and students to get involved in a “pay-it-forward” competition, with more details to come as it develops.

CAB welcomes a new club to campus.

Although the Natural Science Club has been a club off-and-on, it has never been affiliated with CAB until now. CAB Chair Lane Swedberg reminded students that if there is an idea for a new club, bring it up with the CAB executives. He also said that if clubs would like a representative at an event, to bring it up with CAB.

Swedberg reminded students that there will be a pep rally on Sept. 19 to kick-off the home athletic season that will include a lip-syncing competition. He also reminded club representatives that the homecoming nominations link will be emailed this week and the photo sessions will be on both Sept. 26 and 27.

Director of Student Activities, Laure Sinn, is spreading the word that Constitution Day is Sept. 17 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Old Admin. There will potentially be a poster competition and students can enter their name into a raffle for a Mini iPad.

Sinn also gave details for the CSC Rodeo Queen Contest. This will be the first Rodeo Queen Contest since the 70’s. There will be a scholarship as an award for winning, and the woman that wins will get to act as an ambassador for the college. Applications will be available at the information desk in Crites.
