Golf team trapped in a rough
The Chadron State golf team secured the ninth place with a 36-hole total of 724 Tuesday, at the Black Hills State University meet in Spearfish, S.D.
Schuyler Wetzel, sophomore of Hot Springs, S.D., led the team, shooting 80 on 18 holes Tuesday after hitting 86 in Monday’s opening round. She finished 14th amongst 61 players.
“Spearfish Canyon Golf Course is definitely a tough one,” Wetzel said. “I know we are going to keep getting better throughout the next few tournaments.
“Our team is definitely trying to improve everyday, and we give each other the motivation to do the best we can,” she said.
Emma Harris, sophomore of Wahoo, secured a spot in the top 40 with a two-round total of 177.
Elysha Stahla, sophomore of Moorcroft, Wyo., and Danielle Brennan, freshman of Ellsworth, shot 194 and 187 respectively in two rounds.
CSU-Pueblo won the tournament with a score of 623.
It marked the Thunderwolves’ second consecutive RMAC title within two weeks.
About two weeks ago, the Eagles traveled south to Colorado for the CSU-Pueblo Invite Sept. 7-8 to open its Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference competition.
Despite excessive heat, which saw temperatures on the course reaching into the low 100s, the golfers were consistent in the rounds, Stahla said.
The Eagles shot 357 on the first day of competition, and hit a round of 350 on Sunday. They finished in 10th place with 707.
“It was very hot, but we came to play, and we all got better,” said Stahla, who shot 96 and 90 over the weekend.
CSU-Pueblo won its invitational with a 36-hole score of 607, placing them first among 15 schools.
The Eagles’ next meet will be at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology meet in Rapid City, on Wednesday, Sept. 25.
