For the first time since 1974, Chadron State hosted a Rodeo Queen Competition.

Two participants, Tayler Morgan, 19, sophomore of Pine Ridge, S.D., and Bailey McLean, 18, freshman of Sheridan, Wyo., were tested by how well they could ride a horse, went through personal interviews, and even strutted their stuff during the speech and style competition.

Thursday, Morgan and McLean started off with their personal interviews, which were closed to the public. At 5 p.m., the girls dressed in their chosen outfits, and individually described their personal heros.

McLean talked about her best friend who helped her a lot through the years, and is now serving as an U.S. solider. Morgan’s heroes were her grandfather and mother, both of which helped and supported her in everything she did.

After a quick change, the girls were given three questions to answer—they included current events, a personal one, and a question to test their knowledge.

Friday brought a sunny afternoon as judges, participants, and a few CSC administration members, took their places in the middle of the Dawes County Fairgrounds arena.

Laure Sinn, student activities coordinator, started off by saying a little bit about the history of the competition. Shortly after, Sinn introduced both competitors.

After some laughter and anticipation, McLean was named the 2013-14 rodeo queen for CSC. McLean was not only crowned and given a sash, but she also received a belt buckle, a bouquet of roses, and a white Stetson made especially for the occasion.

McLean participated in the rodeo events throughout the weekend.
